From its beginning as a classic childhood tale to its much-anticipated, March 5 3-D movie release, "Alice in Wonderland" has been winning the hearts of its audience for the past 145 years.
The story started out as Lewis Caroll's "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland," a novel about one little girl's trip down a rabbit hole. For years the manuscript made its way around the world allowing readers to create their own mental pictures until 1933. Paramount Pictures brought the story to life in black and white with a star-studded cast.
The movie was then transformed by Walt Disney Productions in 1951. Using then-famous actors, like Ed Wynn and Kathryn Beaumont to provide character voices, Disney turned "Alice in Wonderland" into a Technicolor whirlwind.
After the cartoon's success, "Alice in Wonderland" feature films were remade several times including BBC'c 1966 representation, the 1975 musical porno, the three hour, made-for-TV movie in 1985 and the 1999 Whoopi Goldberg extravaganza.
The "Alice in Wonderland" theme has also inspired dozens of literary works such as James Joyce's "Finnegan's Wake," paintings from famous artists like Salvador Dali, comic book villains found in major stories like Batman, even the hit TV show "Lost" makes references to Alice's world.
