The award traditionally recognizes undergraduate teachers who make a significant impact in the lives and careers of their students and is sponsored by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education and the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.
Over the course of the last ten years, Gurung has established himself as a heavily involved professor with a focus on independent projects with students which provides ample opportunities for student research of which has led to presentations at both regional and national conferences.
Students also appreciate the fact that Gurung takes the time to know his students well and by name, despite the obstacle of larger class sizes.
His success extends outside of the classroom as well. Gurung co-directs UW-Green Bay's Teaching Scholars program as well as serves on the UW System Office of Professional and Instructional Development Executing Committee, both of which are dedicated to improving teaching across the UW System.
He has written on health psychology titled Health Psychology: A Cultural Approach. Gurung is also published in areas of teaching and pedagogy and has edited books such as Exploring Signature Pedagogies: Approaches to Teaching Disciplinary Habits of Mind and Getting Culture: Incorporating Diversity Across the Curriculum, and extensive journal articles on teaching and research methods.
Gurung has also made over 100 presentations at national and international conferences.
