History is in the making as NASCAR's Jimmy Johnson has wrapped up the Sprint Cup Championship.
Johnson is 184 points ahead of second place driver Mark Martin, and can coast his way to history.
NASCAR's version of the playoffs, The Chase for the Sprint Cup has only three races of its scheduled 10 left and barring a major comeback from either teammate Martin or Jeff Gordon, the championship seems to be Johnson's again.
The chase consists of 12 drivers who place highest in the point's standings with 10 races left. During which the drivers are divided by points from first place down, each driver having a varied number of points depending on his position.
Johnson won his third championship last year, becoming one of only eight drivers to ever win three or more championships. He was also the first driver since Cale Yarborough to win three championships in a row.
If Johnson holds off Martin and Gordon in the next three races, which won't take much more than Johnson showing up to the race track, he will make history. Johnson winning the championship would make him the first driver to ever win four championships in a row. This would also put him fourth on the most championships won list.
With four championships, Johnson would be trailing Hall of Famers Dale Earnhardt and Richard Petty, who both hold seven championships.
